Handheld Laser Rangefinder: Binocular vs Monocular
Handheld rangefinders come in two formats: monocular (one eyepiece, one objective) and binocular (two eyepieces, stereo viewing). The choice affects how long you can observe, how well you can find a target, and how much weight you carry.
Binocular vs monocular
| Binocular | Monocular | |
|---|---|---|
| Observation comfort | Both eyes, natural viewing, less fatigue | One eye closed, fatigue over long periods |
| Depth perception | Present, from stereo vision | Absent |
| Weight and size | Higher | Lower |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Extended observation, target search | Quick measurement, carry-every-day |
For military and border observation, binocular is the norm because users watch for long periods. For survey and industrial work, monocular is usually enough.
The WT binocular series
| Model | Range class | Format |
|---|---|---|
| WT12-6 | 6 km | binocular |
| WT12-8 | 8 km | binocular |
| WT12-10 | 10 km | binocular |
| WT12-12 | 12 km | binocular |
| WT15 | 15 km | binocular |
| WT20 | 20 km | binocular |
| WT25 | 25 km | binocular |
The series spans 6 km to 25 km in one mechanical format, so the same controls and eyecups apply across the range. That matters for training and for units that field several variants.
Magnification and range are linked
You cannot range what you cannot see. A 25 km rangefinder with 7× magnification is limited by the operator's ability to identify a target at 25 km, not by the laser. Match magnification to the range class: higher range classes need more magnification to be usable.
What to check before buying
- Magnification and objective diameter, and whether the reticle is illuminated
- Whether an inclinometer is included (needed for height and slope work)
- Laser class and the safety instructions for the aperture
- Battery type and life, and whether it uses standard cells
- Waterproofing and operating temperature range
- Whether the display is visible in daylight and dimmed at night
Frequently asked questions
Are binocular rangefinders better than monocular?
For extended observation, yes — less eye fatigue and stereo depth perception. For quick measurement and low weight, monocular is better.
What range can a handheld reach?
The ERDI WT series spans 6 km to 25 km. Practical range against a small target is less than the maximum, as with any rangefinder.
Do handheld rangefinders measure height?
Only with an inclinometer. Range alone gives slope distance, not height.
Are handheld 1064 nm rangefinders eye-safe?
Handheld units use lower energy than platform modules, but 1064 nm still requires care. Follow the stated laser class and never point at people.
