LR120K1 vs LR160: Long-Range Module Comparison
These are the two largest 1064 nm modules in the ERDI range. Both are built for long stand-off; they differ in how they get there.
Specification comparison
| Parameter | LR120K1 | LR160 |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse energy | ≥ 120 mJ | not published |
| Beam divergence | ≤ 0.15 mrad | ≤ 0.2 mrad |
| Ranging accuracy | ±1 m | not published |
| Mass | ≤ 2 kg | ≤ 3.3 kg |
| Envelope | ≤ 75 × 90 × 220 mm | ≤ 306 × 145 × 94 mm |
| Wavelength | 1064 nm | 1064 nm |
The surprise: tighter divergence in the lighter module
The LR120K1 specifies 0.15 mrad at 2 kg. The LR160 specifies 0.2 mrad at 3.3 kg — a wider beam in a 65% heavier package.
That means the two modules are not simply "good, better". They solve different problems:
- LR120K1: a long, narrow package with the tightest divergence in the range. Built for small targets at extreme range where every microradian counts.
- LR160: a much larger optical envelope (306 × 145 × 94 mm), which suggests a larger receive aperture. A bigger aperture collects more light, which extends range independently of divergence.
In other words, the LR160 trades beam tightness for collection area. Against a target larger than its spot, the bigger aperture can win even with a wider beam.
Envelope consequences
| LR120K1 | LR160 | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | long and narrow (220 mm) | large box (306 mm long) |
| Fits in | a longitudinal bay along a turret axis | a dedicated optics enclosure |
| Mass penalty | 2 kg | 3.3 kg plus a larger mount |
The LR120K1's 75 mm width is unusual for a long-range module and suits integration into a narrow structural bay. The LR160 needs a proper enclosure.
Which to choose

| Maximum collected energy, large targets | LR160 (large aperture) |
| 2 kg mass budget | LR120K1 |
| Narrow longitudinal envelope | LR120K1 (75 mm wide) |
| Dedicated optics enclosure available | LR160 |
Frequently asked questions
Which has longer range?
Not directly comparable from published figures. The LR120K1 has tighter divergence and higher stated energy; the LR160 has a much larger optical envelope, implying a larger receive aperture. Ask for the controlled datasheet with a defined target for both.
Why is the heavier module less tight?
Different design emphasis. The LR160 appears optimised for collection area rather than beam tightness, which is a valid trade for larger targets.
Is the LR120K1 accurate to ±1 m?
Yes, that is its specified ranging accuracy.
Can either designate?
Yes — the LR series combines ranging and designation. Confirm the designation duty cycle and code set for your application.
